Struggling to pay for senior home care? The VA Aid & Attendance pension can provide over $2,700 a month tax-free for Florida veterans and surviving spouses.

The VA Aid and Attendance (A&A) Pension is a tax-free financial benefit designed to help wartime veterans and their surviving spouses pay for in-home care or assisted living. To qualify, applicants must meet the “3 M’s”: Military (served 90 days active duty, with 1 day during an eligible wartime period), Medical (requires assistance with Activities of Daily Living like bathing or dressing), and Money (meet specific net worth and income limits). If approved, the VA pays up to $2,727 per month directly to the veteran to cover private home care agencies.

Southwest Florida is home to one of the largest concentrations of military veterans in the United States. Many of these brave men and women who served during the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Gulf War are now in their 70s, 80s, and 90s, and they need daily assistance to remain safely in their homes.

When families realize that Medicare does not pay for non-medical home care (like help with bathing, meal prep, or supervision for dementia), panic sets in. Paying out-of-pocket for home care can drain a retirement account rapidly.

However, millions of veterans and their spouses are completely unaware that they are legally entitled to a massive, tax-free monthly payout from the Department of Veterans Affairs designed specifically to pay for this exact type of care. It is arguably the best-kept financial secret in eldercare: the VA Aid & Attendance Pension.

The Aid & Attendance (A&A) benefit is an enhanced pension added on top of a basic VA pension. It is a direct, tax-free cash deposit made to the veteran (or surviving spouse) every single month.

The money is designed to reimburse the veteran for out-of-pocket medical expenses, specifically in-home care, assisted living, or adult day care.

As of 2024, the maximum monthly payout rates are substantial:

To unlock these funds, the applicant must meet strict criteria, often referred to as the “3 M’s”: Military, Medical, and Money.

The most heartbreaking aspect of the A&A benefit is how few widows know about it.

If a wartime veteran passes away without ever needing care, their surviving spouse can still claim the Aid & Attendance benefit later in life when they eventually need home care. As long as the spouse was married to the veteran at the time of their death and has not remarried, they are entitled to up to $1,478 a month to pay for their own caregivers.

Many families realize they have too much money in savings to qualify, so they attempt to quickly transfer cash to their adult children right before applying.

Do not do this without an attorney. In 2018, the VA instituted a strict 3-year look-back period. If you gift or transfer assets below fair market value within 36 months of applying, the VA will penalize you and withhold the pension for years. Always consult a VA-accredited elder law attorney before moving any assets to qualify for A&A.

Because the application process is bureaucratic and requires extensive paperwork (DD-214 forms, doctor evaluations, and financial statements), many predatory companies target desperate seniors.

These “pension poachers” will offer to help you apply for a massive upfront fee, or they will offer to sell you complex financial products (like annuities) to hide your assets.
