If you are researching care options for an aging parent in Florida, you have likely run into a wall of confusing terminology.

Home Care.

Home Health.

Skilled Nursing.

Companion Care.

They sound similar, and they often overlap, but they are very different services paid for in different ways and provided by different professionals. Choosing the wrong one can lead to denied insurance claims or, worse, your loved one not getting the level of support they actually need.

At Shal We Home Care, we provide Non-Medical Home Care (also known as Personal Care or Companion Care). To help you navigate the system, here is a clear breakdown of the differences.

1. Medical Home Care (Home Health)

“Home Health” is clinical medical care provided by licensed medical professionals. It is typically prescribed by a doctor after an injury, surgery, or hospitalization.

  • The Goal: To treat a specific medical condition or rehabilitate the patient so they can become independent again. It is usually temporary (short-term).
  • Who Provides It: Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Physical Therapists (PT), Occupational Therapists (OT).
  • Typical Tasks:
  • Wound care and dressing changes.
  • Administering IV medications or injections.
  • Monitoring unstable health status.
  • Physical therapy exercises to regain mobility after a stroke or fall.
  • Who Pays: Medicare or private health insurance usually pays for this if it is prescribed by a physician and the patient is considered “homebound.”

2. Non-Medical Home Care (What Shalwe Provides)

“Home Care” is supportive care designed to help with the activities of daily living. It does not require a doctor’s prescription, and it is focused on quality of life and safety.

  • The Goal: To help the senior live safely and comfortably at home for the long term. It addresses chronic needs rather than acute medical treatment.
  • Who Provides It: Home Health Aides (HHAs), Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), and Professional Caregivers.
  • Typical Tasks:
  • Personal Care: Bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting.
  • Mobility: Help moving from bed to chair, walking assistance to prevent falls.
  • Household: Meal preparation, light housekeeping, laundry, changing linens.
  • Social: Companionship, transportation to appointments, medication reminders.
  • Who Pays: Private pay (out of pocket), Long-Term Care Insurance, or VA Aid & Attendance benefits. Medicare generally does not pay for non-medical custodial care.

Which One Does Your Loved One Need?

You likely need Medical Home Health if:

  • They recently had surgery and need a wound checked.
  • They had a stroke and need intensive speech or physical therapy.
  • Their medications are changing frequently and need nurse monitoring.

You likely need Non-Medical Home Care (Shalwe) if:

  • They are forgetting to take their pills.
  • They are losing weight because they can’t cook.
  • The house is cluttered or dirty because they can’t clean.
  • They are lonely and isolated.
  • They need help getting into the shower safely.
  • You (the family caregiver) are burned out and need a break.

The Power of combining Both

Ideally, these two services work together. This is often the “Gold Standard” for recovery.

  • Scenario: Mom breaks her hip.
  • The Solution:
  • Medicare Home Health sends a Physical Therapist 3 times a week for 45 minutes to teach her exercises.
  • Shal we Home Care sends a caregiver for 4 hours every morning to help her get out of bed, shower safely, make breakfast, and encourage her to do those exercises on the days the therapist isn’t there.

When Home Health stops (usually after a few weeks), Shalwe Home Care can stay in place to ensure Mom remains safe for the long haul.
